Former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Larry Allen passed away over the weekend while on vacation with his family.
According to a statement from the Cowboys, Allen, 52, was in Mexico at the time of his death.
The NFL team shared their condolences, saying owner Jerry Jones’ family and the Cowboys “extend their deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers to the Allen family and grieve along with the many other friends and Cowboys teammates who also loved Larry.”
“The Dallas Cowboys are very saddened to share that Cowboys legend, Super Bowl Champion, Cowboys Ring of Honor member, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Larry Allen has passed away,” the team said in the statement.
The team added, “Larry, known for his exceptional athleticism and remarkable strength, was one of the most respected and accomplished offensive linemen in NFL history. His versatility and reliability were defining features of his career. He continued to inspire many players, exemplifying what it means to be a great teammate, competitor, and winner.”
Allen is considered one of the greatest offensive linemen in Cowboys history. He was inducted as a first-ballot Hall of Famer in 2013 and was a member of the All-Decade team for both the 1990s and 2000s. Over his 14-season career in the NFL, he spent 12 seasons with Dallas and two with the San Francisco 49ers. He won Super Bowl 30 with the Cowboys, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17.
His notable achievements include 11 Pro Bowl selections, seven All-Pro honors, and being named to the NFL’s Top 100 players list in 2019.
Allen is survived by his wife, Janelle, who the team said “deeply loved and cared for” him and whom Allen referred to as his “heart and soul,” as well as his daughters Jayla and Loriana and son Larry III.
The Cowboys stated that memorial service details will be announced “in the near future.”
